Harvey C. Barbee

Lt/Col. Harvey C. Barbee, formerly of Goldsboro, 85, United States
Air Force, retired, died Friday evening , 3 May 2002 in Calhoun,
Georgia, at the home of his daughter, Julia Gray Butterfield, where
he had resided since 1996 following the death of his wife of 54
years, Frances S. Barbee of Goldsboro, N.C.
A native of Durham, NC he was the son of the late Harvey C. and Lula
Gray Barbee. He attended the University of North Carolina and the
University of the Phillipines . He flew the Mitchel B-25 in WWII,
the Douglas B-26 in the Korean conflict, and the L-19 Birdog in
Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller.
After Vietnam, he commanded an F-105 unit at Brookly AFB, Alabama.
He was instrumental in achieving Squadron status for the unit.
Similar squadrons were then established at each of the Air Material
Areas.
Upon his retirement in 1968, he and his two partners operated
Goldsboro-Wayne Aviation. He taught over 300 people to fly and/or
upgrade their ratings. He terminated his flying career in March,
1983 having flown for over 17,000 hours in just under 40 years.
During his military career he was awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross, the Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force
Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Korean Service
Medal, the U.N. Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European African
Middle East Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the
Vietnam Service Medal, and the Korean Victory Medal.
He is survived by one daughter, Julia Gray Butterfield and her
husband Dr. Arthur Butterfield of Calhoun, Georgia; one grandson,
Jeffery T. Butterfield of Dallas, Texas; 4 granddaughters and their
husbands, Georgia and John O’Brien of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Betsy and
Mike Dickerhoff of Waynsboro, VA, Judy Kay and Jim Krein of Gentry,
Arkansas and Heather Butterfield of Calhoun; two sisters, Jane King
of Durham, NC, and Virginia Thompson of Bellingham, Washington.
There are 7 great-grandchildren; Molly, Patrick and Conner O’Brien
and Kristin, Natialie, Emily and Nathan Dickerhoff.
There will be a private family remembrance in his honor.
