Richard Preston Benefield


Goldsboro – Mr. Richard Preston Benefield, 68, of 112 New Hope Village Drive, died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Preston J. Benefield and Grace L. Bevan Benefield. Mr. Benefield was retired from U.S. Civil Service and was retired from the United States Air Force. While serving in the United States Air Force, he was the recipient of a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis Thigpen Benefield; four daughters, Susan Benefield of Santa Barbara, Calif., Phyllis Spence of Lexington, SC, Sherry West of Columbia, SC and Sharon Benefield Lindback of Twin Falls, Idaho; two sons, Kenneth Benefield of Las Vegas, Nev. and Al Cotter of Goldsboro; three sisters, Laverne Cappelli of Baltimore, Maryland, Mary Hughes of Salisbury, Maryland and Shirley Matthys of Goldsboro; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
