Jerry K. Best

Goldsboro – Captain Jerry K. Best, 48, of 100 Moss Hill Drive, died Wednesday from injuries sustained in a roadside accident while on duty.

A native of Wayne County, Mr. Best was the son of Daisy Lane Best of Goldsboro and the late Paul C. Best and had worked with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department for 25 years, currently serving as Captain and Chief of the Detectives. Mr. Best was an instructor at Wayne Community College in the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program and was actively involved in working with security at the Wayne County Public Schools. He was an avid fisherman and pilot.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Bailey and the Chaplain of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Rev. Larry Crane will officiate. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Donna Mitchell Best; a sister, Paulette Suggs and husband, Bill and their children, Kylie Suggs and Lindsey Suggs of Goldsboro; his brothers, Doug Best of Rocky Mount and Larry Best and his children, Derrick Best and John Paul Best of Goldsboro; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Billy A. Mitchell and Carol M. Mitchell of Goldsboro; a brother-in-law, Allen Mitchell and his daughter, Kristie Mitchell and wife, Wanda of Goldsboro; and a great-nephew, Tony Allen Barbour.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department will serve as pallbearers and will provide service honors at the graveside.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, 495 Tommy’s Road, Goldsboro.
