Jean Speed Claiborne

Fremont – Mrs. Jean Speed Claiborne, 74, of 216 Hooks Avenue, died Monday at WilMed Nursing Home in Wilson.

A native of Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur Speed and Hettie Frazier Speed. Mrs. Claiborne was a member of the Fremont Missionary Baptist Church and the church bible study group.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fremont Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Powell Dew officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford, NC.

Mrs. Claiborne is survived by her husband, William David Claiborne, Sr.; a daughter, Hettie Lou Sasser of Fremont; sons, William D. Claiborne, Jr. and wife, Nola of Pikeville and Benjamin C. Claiborne and wife, Christine of Pikeville; sisters, Lucy Mouse of Fort Smith, Ark. And Anne D. Hallman of Boone; seven grandchildren, Lauren Claiborne, Morgan Claiborne, Christian Claiborne, Carlin Claiborne, Miles Claiborne, Benjamin Sasser and Jonathan Sasser; and one great-grandchild, Elijah Sasser.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur Lee Speed.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Seymour Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the residence of William and Nola Claiborne, Jr., 101 Wayne Court, Pikeville.
