Anna Potter Derby

Anna Potter Derby, 60, formerly of Goldsboro, N.C., died Wednesday,
May 19, 2004 at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. She
was born December 16, 1943 in Raleigh, N.C. to the late Annabelle
Hicks and James Harper Potter. At an early age Anna moved with her
family to Snow Hill, N.C. where she spent her childhood. She was a
graduate of Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C. and educated at
Sweet Briar College and UNC-Chapel Hill where she was a member of
Chi Omega sorority. In later years she acquired teacher
certification from ECU and taught high school English. After she and
her husband moved from Goldsboro to Raleigh, she was employed for a
number of years with the law firms of Kilpatrick Stockton and
Hutchison & Mason. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church,
Goldsboro.
She is survived by her husband, William Jay Derby, Jr.; a daughter
and son-in-law, Hope Derby Carmichael and Randolph H. Carmichael,
III of Raleigh; a son and daughter-in-law, William Jay Derby, III
and Susan Wall Derby of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; and two
grandchildren, Emma Hope Carmichael and Caroline Woods Derby. She is
also survived by her mother-in-law, Hope S. Derby and two
sisters-in-law and their families, Ellen D. Best and C. Munroe Best
Jr. and Susan D. Stackhouse and Wilson Stackhouse all of Goldsboro,
N.C.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, May 21, 2004 at
First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro, N.C. The family will greet
friends Friday following the service in the fellowship hall at First
Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be at St Barnabas
Episcopal Cemetery in Snow Hill, N.C.
