Harriette Thompson Heyward

Harriette Thompson Heyward, 74, died, May 2, 2002 at UNC Hospital in
Chapel Hill, NC. She was born April 28, 1928 in Goldsboro, NC and
grew up there. She was the daughter of the late William Berry
Thompson and Gertrude Merrimon Thompson. She graduated valedictorian
from Goldsboro High School and then attended Hollins College in
Roanoke, VA, majoring in music. Following her graduation, she worked
in New York City for an advertising agency, before marrying Francis
"Pete" Dewey Heyward. While living in McLean, VA, she taught piano
and was very active in the Colonial Dames Society. She returned to
Goldsboro in 1977 after Pete's retirement from military and
government service. She was an avid gardener, pianist, gourmet cook
and artist and taught watercolor classes at the Goldsboro Art
Center, frequently exhibiting her works in the annual juried art
show there. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and
served on the altar guild.
She is survived by her brothers, William B. Thompson, Jr. and
Charles A. Thompson and her children, Merrimon H. Wright, Elizabeth
H. O'Reilly, Harriette H. Charbonneau and William Francis Heyward.
Also surviving her are her grandchildren, Jeremy C. Charbonneau,
Nicole E. Charbonneau and Lindsey M. Wright.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverend Gene Carpenter at
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 5, 2002 at 2:30 p.m.,
with private interment following at Willowdale Cemetery. Friends and
family may visit on Saturday, May 4th, between the hours of 4 and 6
p.m. at the Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be sent to the Goldsboro Community Arts
Council, the American Heart Association or St. Stephen's Episcopal
Church in Goldsboro. |
