Sallie Sutton Hollowell

Goldsboro – Mrs. Sallie Sutton Hollowell, 96, of the Rosewood Community went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday evening, December 28, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was a native of Wayne County and the daughter of the late Bernice L. and Minnie McClenny Sutton.

Sallie graduated from Rosewood High School in 1926. She attended East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville. She taught in the Goldsboro City Schools and Wayne County Public Schools for 17 years. After retirement in 1972, she worked as a substitute teacher and as a volunteer in the schools’ reading program and the Red Cross. Sallie was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Retired School Teacher’s Association. She was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 15 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society. Sallie was also a member of the Rosewood Community Home Demonstration Club.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Crane and Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating. Interment will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Langston-Hollowell Family Cemetery.

She is survived by her son, James Rodney Hollowell and wife Kay of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Teresa Williams and husband David, Cathy Hollowell and special friend Caperse Edgerton, Debbie Hollowell and fiancée, Junior Lawhorn, Michael Hollowell and wife Stephanie, Carla Massengill and husband Michael and Amy Hartley and husband Larry, all of Goldsboro; three step-grandchildren, Karen Williams and husband Edwin of Goldsboro, Kevin Monroe and wife Lisa, and Ken Monroe and wife Kim, all of Gastonia. She is also survived by her ten great-grandchildren, Becky, Leslie, Scotty, Ashlee, Joshua, Milford, Connor, Veronica, Daniel and Stalen, all of Goldsboro; and five step-great-grandchildren, Stacy, Coleman, Meredith, Mary Elise and Edwin II and one great-great-grandchild, Holly. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Alice Smith and Rachel Braswell, both of Goldsboro, Jean Langley of Clayton and Marsalette (Marcie) Guill, of Danville, VA.

Sallie was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Milford Hollowell, a son, Milford Edgar Hollowell, and infant daughter, Caroline. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Walton Sutton, Mittie Brock, Alton Sutton, Julia Fail, Bernice Sutton, David Sutton, Claxton Sutton and Dorothy Carraway.

The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Rodney and Kay Hollowell, 212 Hollowell Road, Goldsboro.
