Guy Phil Johnson


Goldsboro – Mr. Guy Phil Johnson, 60, of 1511 Scotty Drive, died Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Johnston County, he was the son of the late Blake Johnson and Thelma Baker Johnson. Mr. Johnson did some farming in Johnston County, raising swine, and corn and tobacco crops until 1963, when he married Elizabeth Wood, of Benson and moved to Goldsboro. Once he settled in Goldsboro, he eyed the possibility of entering police work and soon made his application to the local department. Mr. Johnson completed his police training and school and also received an associate degree in police science and a B.A. degree in polical science from Fayetteville State University. Mr. Johnson was a retired sergeant from the Goldsboro Police Department with 32 years of service. He always identified the most rewarding aspect of his police work, being of service to local residents and assisting individuals in a time of need.


Mr. Johnson attended Grace Baptist Church and was on the Board of Directors of the Wayne County Wildlife Club. 

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Frasher and Rev. Bill Bradley officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lorie Waller and husband, Wes of Goldsboro; a son, Guy Phil Johnson II and wife, Jodi of Goldsboro; a grandson, Colt Cowdry of Goldsboro; a sister, Hixie Pope of Benson; a brother, Glenn Johnson and wife, Helen of Smithfield; and his nieces, Cindy Johnson of Benson, Frieda Raynor of Benson, Lynn Johnson of Smithfield and Kay Johnson of Smithfield.

Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be officers of the Goldsboro Police Department.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
