James C. Kannan

Goldsboro – Mr. James C. Kannan of Goldsboro, NC died Sunday at
Kitty Askins Hospice Center at the age of 81.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of James C. Kannan, Sr. and
Linda Kannan. Mr. Kannan was owner and operator of Goldsboro Fruit
and Salvage for more than 50 years. A graduate of Goldsboro High
School, Edwards Military Academy and Presbyterian College in
Clinton, SC, he was member of Alpha Lamba Tau fraternity. He was
also a member of the Goldsboro Host Lions Club, the Retired Officers
Association, and the North Carolina National Guard.
Mr. Kannan was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 71st
Infantry Division as a combat officer. Soon after, he was
instrumental in the reorganization of the National Guard in
Goldsboro, serving as Unit Commander of the 109th Infantry,
Executive Officer of the 105th Medical Battalion and Commander of
the 730th Maintenance Battalion in Butner, NC until his retirement
as Lieutenant Colonel on June 30, 1971.
A lifelong member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, he was a member
of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Team. He also served on the
Parish Council and the Finance Committee.
Mr. Kannan is survived by his wife, Agnes Hallow Kannan of
Goldsboro; two daughters, Carolyn K. Jurick and her husband, John
and Jo Ann K. Birrell and her husband, David; grandchildren,
Elizabeth A. Jurick, John Kannan Jurick, and Joseph E. Jurick; two
step-grandchildren all of Marietta, GA; a sister, Theresa K. Worrell
of Alpharetta, GA.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia K. Roberts and Helen
K. Rabil.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary
Roman Catholic Church with Rev. William Ruhl, O.S.F.S. presiding.
Burial with full military honors will be in Willow Dale Cemetery. A
wake service will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel
and the family will remain until 9 p.m. to receive friends.
The Goldsboro Host Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
