Raymond Kerlin

Raymond Kerlin, 84, of Alterra Sterling House in Goldsboro died on
Wednesday 12 June at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
A native of New Jersey, Dr. Kerlin graduated from the Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy & Science. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Later,
he attained a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University. He
authored several articles for the American Journal of Veterinary
Medicine and other scholarly journals. He was recognized as a
Diplomate by the American Board of Veterinary Public Health and the
American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine, as well as an
Honor Roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Upon the start of World War II, Dr. Kerlin enlisted as a private in
the US Army Infantry. Before the end of 1941, he accepted a
Commission and served as Company Executive Officer, 513th Parachute
Infantry, 17th Airborne Division in the European theatre. Military
honors included the Bronze Star. The Berlin Wall Crisis prompted a
tour of duty with the ANG in Chaumont, France during the early
1960s. He transferred through the US Army Reserves, Air National
Guard, and US Air Force Reserves, ultimately retiring as a
Lieutenant Colonel, USAF.
During a 20-year career with the State of New Jersey, he served in
the Department of Agriculture (Chief, Bureau of Livestock Disease
Control) and the Department of Health (Senior Public Health
Veterinarian). Also, he founded a thriving private veterinary
practice, specializing in small animals. His career was chronicled
as a chapter in "The Feisty Veterinarians of New Jersey" (NJVMA,
1984).
Dr. Kerlin is survived by his wife of 56 years (Constance L. Kerlin
of Goldsboro), two sons (CWO Stephen D. Kerlin, USN of Jacksonville
FL and Kevin J. Kerlin, MD of Goldsboro), one daughter (Patricia J.
Harms of Southampton NJ), and five grandchildren.
Rite of Christian Burial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Roman
Catholic Church at 10:00 AM on Saturday 15 June. A memorial service
with Military Honors will be held at General William C. Doyle
Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown NJ on Monday 17 June.
