Gurney Alvin Laws


Goldsboro – Gurney Alvin Laws, 86, 590 Paul Hare Road, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Thomas Isaac and Delodious Brock Laws. Gurney’s father was financial secretary for Woodmen Lodge from 1913 to 1939, when Gurney took over these duties. There he served Woodmen in that capacity for sixty one years, and gave up those duties in 2000. He enjoyed a thirty three year career in sales with Woodmen, retiring March 1, 1981. Gurney served his community tirelessly, practicing the tenants of Woodmen, “We are truly our brother’s keeper.” He earned many recognitions from Woodmen for this devotion and dedication and his sales achievements and Gurney was a true, fraternalist.

Gurney was a member and past Lay Leader of Falling Creek United Methodist where he served as Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a charter member of the Grantham Volunteer Fire Department. 

Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Craig Langston officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anderson Laws; his daughter, Myrtle Ann Lumpkin of Grantham; sons, Alvin Laws and wife, Peggy of Goldsboro and Kenneth Laws and wife Liz of Southern Pines; a brother, Luby Laws of Grantham; grandchildren, Alan Lumpkin and wife, Patsy of Grantham, Al Laws, II and wife, Denise of Goldsboro, Ken Laws, II & wife, Randi, Todd Laws and wife, Jen, and Darin Laws, all of Pinebluff, NC; and Sherri Kornegay and husband, Lawrence of Rosewood; great grandchildren, Eric Lumpkin, Damara Laws, Josh Laws, Kody Laws, Tommy Kornegay, Travis Kornegay, Jennifer King, Gage Kornegay and Thomas Kornegay; and many nieces and nephews.

Although flowers are welcome, memorials may be made to Falling Creek United Methodist Church, 299 Falling Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
