Carolyn Stenhouse Lewis


Goldsboro – Mrs. Carolyn Stenhouse Lewis, 81, died Friday at her home.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Washington, DC and was the daughter of the late Henry Merritt Stenhouse and Mary Cleaves Daniels Stenhouse. She was married to the late John Dortch Lewis and was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Lewis was a graduate of St. Mary’s College in Raleigh. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and also a member of the Colonial Dames.

Graveside services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery with Rev. Eugene Carpenter and Rt. Rev. George D. Stenhouse officiating.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her daughters, Millie Rostan of Pinehurst and Caroline Miles and her husband, Bruce of Pittsboro; her son, John D. Lewis Jr. and wife, Jenny of Goldsboro; a sister, Marjorie Stenhouse Smith of Goldsboro; a brother, Rt. Rev. George Daniels Stenhouse of Louisville, Kentucky; and nine grandchildren.

Grandsons of Mrs. Lewis, Junius Jones McCall, John Dortch McCall, William Lewis Nimick, Joshua Duling McCall, John Dortch Lewis III, Paul Spencer Lewis and Gaston McKee Lewis will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Cleaves Stenhouse Smith and a brother, Dr. Henry Merritt Stenhouse.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 106 N. Claiborne Street, Goldsboro.
