Clarence W. Peacock

Clarence W. "Icky" Peacock, 89, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 13, 1913, in Wayne County, the son of the late C.W. Peacock Sr. and Ethel Smith Peacock. He attended the Goldsboro City Schools and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1947 he founded Wayne Realty & Insurance Company, which was originally C.W. Peacock Real Estate Agency in 1933 and subsequently became Parker and Peacock Partnership in 1937. He served as chairman of the boards of directors of Wayne Memorial Hospital, the First American Savings and Loan Association and Goldsboro Industries and served on the boards of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army and several banking institutions.

One of his greatest passions was the Boy Scouts of America. At the time of his death, he had been continuously active in the Tuscarora Council longer than any other Boy Scout. He was scoutmaster of Troop I when Goldsboro had only two troops. He received such honors as the Silver Beaver Award, and in 1998 he became the third member of the Tuscarora Council to receive Scoutingšs highest honor, the Distinguished Eagle Award. Due to his generosity, more than 500 boys have been able to attend summer camp.

Mr. Peacock is survived by his wife, Jessie Rose Yelverton Peacock; a son, Banks Peacock and wife, Deborah; a daughter, Jo Ann Logan and husband, Bob; three grandchildren, Erin and Kevin Logan and Clark Peacock, all of Goldsboro; and two sisters, Mrs. Hubert Ellison of Goldsboro and Mrs. W.C. Dees of Wilson.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Seymour Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2:30 p.m. at Camp Tuscarora, off Stevens Mill Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maintenance and Building fund for Camp Tuscarora at BSA, P.O. Box 1436, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533; or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 264, Goldsboro, N.C., 27533-0264.
