Betty McLawhon Pennington

Goldsboro – Betty McLawhon Pennington, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

Betty was born in Greene County on December 10, 1928 to the late Mark H. McLawhon and Augusta Dixon McLawhon. She was married to the late Milford Earl Pennington. Betty had worked as a teacher with both Wayne County and Johnston County School Systems and had also retired from the United States Postal service with 10 years of service. She was a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Bailey and Rev. Barry Williamson officiating. Interment will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Falling Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Grantham Community.

Betty is survived by her son, Rex Pennington and wife, Jan of Goldsboro; her daughters, Kim Corbitt and husband, Charles of Nahunta, Terri Huffman and husband, Cecil of Rocky Mount and Penny Jo Howell and husband, Johnnie of Pikeville; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Mildred Harris of Oceanside, CA and Ellen Benton of Troy, IL; and her brothers, Jimmy McLawhon of Goldsboro, Ricky McLawhon of Mount Olive and Billy McLawhon of Pikeville.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Benny Mack Pennington; her sister, Jean Underwood; and her brothers, Mark Dixon McLawhon, Joe McLawhon and Charles McLawhon.

The family will receive friends Thursday following the service in the fellowship hall of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church and other times at the home of Rex and Jan Pennington, 104 Crosswinds Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
