Helen Mern Rustin


Goldsboro – Mrs. Helen Mern Rustin, 88, died Monday at her home.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Chalmers Mern and Dorette Jane Mern and was the widow of Howard Frank Rustin. Mrs. Rustin was a retired first grade school teacher and was the first woman elected to the school board for the Syosset, New York School System. She was a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia University. While a resident of Goldsboro, Mrs. Rustin was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

A celebration of her life will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Eugene Carpenter presiding.

Mrs. Rustin is survived by her daughters, Barbara Mern Rustin of Keene, New Hampshire, Jane Dorette Rustin of Goldsboro and Belzora Helen Rustin of Arlington, Mass.; her grandsons, Richard Rustin Perlungher and wife Nicole and Thomas Henry Perlungher; and a great-granddaughter, Ellie Perlungher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Soup Kitchen at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 N. James Street, Goldsboro, NC 27534 or the charity of one’s choice.

The family will greet friends following the service in the parlor of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
