Marian DeWitt Smart


Dunn – Mrs. Marian DeWitt Smart, 99, formerly of Goldsboro, died Tuesday at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn. She had been a patient at Parrish Nursing Center, Inc. in Dunn for several years.

A native of Maxfield, Maine, she was the daughter of the late David A. DeWitt and Winifred Bailey DeWitt and was married to the late Harry Tolman of Maxfield, ME and Harry A. Smart of Bangor, ME. Mrs. Smart was a telephone operator with a phone company in Boston, Mass and was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star of Portland, ME. Mrs. Smart was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientists in Bangor, ME and of Kinston, NC

Funeral services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, ME.

Mrs. Smart is survived by her grandson, David Tolman Miller of Goldsboro; a granddaughter, Deborah M. Bass and husband, Ray Bass of Galax, VA; granddaughter-in-law, Lorri S. Miller of Goldsboro; great-grandsons, Samuel A. Miller of Goldsboro, and Richard M. Bass of Galax, VA; great-granddaughter, Heather D. Miller Macanas and husband, Meldon A. Macanas of Goldsboro and Kathryn S. Bass of Galax, VA; and her great-great-granddaughter, Alexis R. Miller of Goldsboro.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Juanita M. Tolman Miller of Goldsboro, son-in-law, Richard Donald Miller of Goldsboro, her grand-daughter, Barbara Suzanne Miller of Bangor, ME and her grandson, Alan Kent Miller of Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
