TSGT (Ret) Leon Hugh Smeal

Goldsboro – TSGT (Ret.) Leon Hugh Smeal, 68, of 170 Leslie Road, died Tuesday at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Durham.

A native of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, he was the eighth of thirteen children. Mr. Smeal was a 20 year retired United States Air Force Veteran. He was very active in the community and has been a resident of Goldsboro for 31 years. Mr. Smeal was past commander of the American Legion Post 11 Goldsboro, past Grande Chef de Gare of North Carolina, past Chef 1538, past Commander of VFW Post 2615 of Goldsboro and past Seam Squirrel Pup Tent #10. He was a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge #112 A.F.&A.M. and was past and present president of the Wayne County Veteran’s Council.


Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Casey officiating. Burial with full military honors and Masonic rites will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Smeal is survived by his wife, Barbara Smeal; sons, Irvin Smeal and wife, Madonna of Orlando, FL and Aaron Smeal and wife, Jeannie of Goldsboro; a daughter, Cindy Flowers and husband, Mark of Raleigh; grandchildren, Mindy Smeal of Goldsboro, Melissa Browning of Raleigh, Chris Smeal of Goldsboro and Brandon Smeal of Orlando, FL; great-granddaughter, Payton Spencer of Goldsboro; sisters, Elsie Price of Huntington, PA, Lucy Sneddon of DuBois, PA, Wanda George and husband, Les of Dunkirk, MD, Joyce Lombardo and husband, Victor of Colonial Beach, VA; brothers, Russell Smeal and wife, Nellie of Havertown, PA, Ken Smeal and wife, Jean of Tonawanda, NY, Dale Smeal and Joan Bolla of Goldsboro and Ronnie Smeal and wife, Carol of Clarence Center, NY; and a sister-in-law, Gloria Smeal of Torrance, CA.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Emma Jean and brothers, Gerald, Bobby, Maurice and Don.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his residence.
