Obituary for Georgia Capps Johnson

Georgia was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, May 21, 1933 to Archibald "Archie" and Lena Lola Turner Capps. She was the first of seven children. Her siblings Lillie Belle Capps Krieg, (Oregon, deceased), Norma Jean Capps Birdwell, (Nashville, Tennessee), Billy Edgar Capps, (Oregon, deceased), Doris Lee Capps Hill, (Nashville, deceased), Lawana Sue Capps Litchford, (Nashville, Tennessee), and Janet Gale Capps Rivenbark, (Nashville, Tennessee) all grew up in Knoxville and Nashville Tennessee. Georgia enjoyed school and books became her passion.

As a young adult, she shared an apartment with her best friend and first cousin, Faye. Georgia met her future husband of 45 years, Lawton Walker Johnson (died July 21, 2000) at a USO dance. They were married July 9, 1955 and wanted a large family. A year later, God blessed them with Steven "Steve" Scott Johnson (realtor, Richmond,VA), then, Lawton Douglas "Doug" Johnson (CPA, Greensboro, NC), next came their first daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Alice Johnson Garitan (teacher, Caan, France), then, Katherine Burnette Johnson (dental hygienist, Goldsboro, NC), and lastly, Debra "Debbie" Lynn Johnson Merendino (radiologist, now a field manager for FBT, Inc., Durham, NC).

Georgia worked hard as a wife and mother, learning to cook, budget, and drive. She learned to sew and did side jobs, more full-time when the children were all in school, to help in allowing her children to participate in sports, tumbling, swimming, and scouts. She was active in the community and church.

After raising her five children, Georgia fulfilled a longtime goal of going to college. She graduated from Wayne Community College as a Registered Nurse, May 1987. She worked a year at Wayne Memorial Hospital, then, added part-time Hospice. A bit later, an opening at the health department became her perfect "job/setting" for her.

In the late 1990's, her husband became critically ill. She retired so that she could homecare until his passing in 2000. For the next several years, Georgia "wintered" with her sister, Lillie and husband, John with a retirement community outside of Palm Springs, California. She enjoyed this time of being away and living life with people of her own age. With John's passing, Georgia moved "home" to Nashville, Tennessee and enjoyed being with her sisters, life events, and holidays. When her health declined, she decided to move back to North Carolina and remained with her youngest, Debbie, until her passing, August 4, 2018.

Georgia instilled in her family, a gracious love of life, family, and education. She worked toward her goals until achieved, no matter how many times she failed. She loved being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, registered nurse, grandmother to twelve (Brandie Felts, Eric Hammons, Michael Paxinos, Gabriella Merendino, Ettore Merendino, Dario Merendino, Isabella Merendino, Martha Garitan, Jason Garitan, Julia Johnson,Michael Johnson, and Haley Johnson), and great-grandma to eight (Courteney Felts, Wake Felts, Gracie Felts, Alexander Hammons-Perez, Marcos Hammons-Perez, Simon Garitan, Tobias Garitan, and Hailey Paxinos). Her passion of reading, helping others, singing in the choir, playing the dulcimer and music, and arts and crafts never diminished.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church where she was a member. A service celebrating her life will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary with her pastor, Rev. James Harry officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Dale Cemetery.
