Henry was born in Goldsboro on August 7, 1930 to the late Henry Vance Modlin Sr. and Luna Dixon Modlin. He graduated from Goldsboro High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After college Henry returned to Goldsboro and joined the family business, Modlin Oil Company. He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. He was a member of the Goldsboro Country Club where he served as president and was a member of the Goldsboro Jaycees for ten years, serving as treasurer. Henry also served for many years on the First Citizens Bank & Trust Company local Board of Advisors. After selling Modlin Oil Company, he became a real estate broker. In retirement he developed a passion for watercolor and graciously shared his talents with others. Henry’s happiest days were spent at his vacation home, affectionately known as The Happy Hour, in Salter Path, NC.

Henry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sallie Settle Modlin; daughters, Ruth Ellett and husband Scott of Richmond, VA, Ginny Tyler and husband Rob of Raleigh, and Mollie Brice and husband Graham of Wilmington; and grandchildren, Emily Brice, Sallie Ellett, Jamie Tyler and Vance Brice. He is also survived by his sister, Betsy M. Snyder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Paul Garrison.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to caregivers Lula Brake, Shana Pritchett and Theresa Kargbo.
