Obituary for Patricia Hood Thigpen

Patricia Hood Thigpen completed her journey home on June 2, 2018 to the welcoming words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Patricia was born on August 17, 1933 in the Grantham community to the late Henry Stanton Hood and Gladys Virginia Wright Hood. She was a graduate of Campbell University. She was married for 48 years to the love of her life M. Elton Thigpen. After moving to Springfield, Virginia, Patricia became a faithful member of First Baptist Church. She taught children in Sunday school and served in the nursery. Her beautiful voice was part of the weekly service as she sang in the choir. One of her favorite church activities was playing in the hand-bell choir. She was generous with her time and energy to her family, her church community, and the community at large. Patricia edited and processed the community newsletter for years. She was instrumental in establishing and sustaining an active community watch program. Patricia was an avid bridge player, enjoyed a good crossword puzzle and would break out a jigsaw puzzle regularly. She was known for her delicious cooking and baking. Elton grew a large vegetable garden so Pat prepared or canned and shared the bounty with friends and neighbors. Her fried chicken, homemade pickles and carrot cake were celebrated by all.

Patricia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a genuine friend to everyone. She went above and beyond to help wherever and whenever it was needed. She will be missed by all who were blessed enough to know her.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Patricia’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Interment will be beside her husband in Wayne Memorial Park.

Patricia is survived by her children, Karen Rowan and husband Tim, Janice McCallum, and Ron Thigpen and wife Lisa Bachelder; grandchildren, Yaleena Rowan, Eli Rowan, Cameron McCallum and Kathryn McCallum; and two great-grandchildren, Justin Rowan and Jonathan Rowan. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Al Hood and wife Olga; sister-in-law, Patty Farr; and several nieces and nephews she loved very much. Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, M. Elton Thigpen, son-in-law Scott McCallum and great grandson Joshua Rowan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road SW, Lilburn, GA 30047 or to the First Baptist Church, 7300 Gary Street, Springfield, VA 22150.
