Obituary for Betty Flowers Rackley

Betty Flowers Rackley, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center with her daughter Carolyn Rackley Byers by her side.

Betty was born in Wayne County on May 1, 1928 to the late Kyle F. Flowers and Willie Fleming Flowers. Betty and her younger sister, Janet, were blessed to be raised by loving parents who taught the importance of family, faith, and education.

Betty graduated from Pikeville School and received her Bachelor of Science in Music from Atlantic Christian College. Serving for 25 years as a music teacher with Wayne County Public Schools, she taught thousands of students the joys of music. She also taught private piano lessons to many young people.

Both Betty and Janet were musically gifted and helped create the musical legacy of St. Joseph United Methodist Church. As young girls they took piano lessons and sang in the choirs at church. Betty began playing piano and organ for church services as a young teenager. This talented musician served in her music ministry for over 70 years. Janet acted as the Choir Director for over 40 years until her death. Betty and Janet also sang with Third Century Singers for many years.

Betty was involved in numerous activities at St. Joseph UMC and faithfully served with the United Methodist Women. For many years she acted as the church historian and made photographs of members at the church events. She always made people smile for the camera. The church family will likely remember her delicious deviled eggs and cornbread cake that were highlights at church dinners.

Betty married Elmer Rackley, and they raised two daughters, Sandra and Carolyn. Life for Betty was always an adventure. She followed Elmer in his hobbies of auto racing and fishing. In 1961 the family moved to the tropical island of Guam. They enjoyed this beautiful paradise until Typhoon Karen battered the small island with winds of 200 mph. Unfortunately this devastating storm destroyed about 90% of the buildings, including their home. Even this misfortune did not crush her valiant spirit. The journey back to Carolina took Elmer, Betty and Carolyn on a fascinating tour through Asia and Europe.

This two year adventure gave her an appreciation for all peoples and cultures. She was so quick to talk and make friends with others no matter their background. New people just became new friends. She also had a gentle kindness with children and animals. Her home always had a favorite cat or dog for her to love and spoil. Never losing her childlike spirit of joy, she would take time to play and have fun with others. Betty was a truly loving spirit who graced this world with music, kindness and generosity.

In later years, Betty resided at Carolina Living Assisted Care and Countryside Village in Pikeville. She was blessed with loving care by the compassionate staff of these facilities. Even as her memory faded, she still offered her kind, sweet smile. Much appreciation is extended to these facilities as well for the end of life care at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Betty Rackley is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Rackley Byers; niece, Linda Price Cherry; nephew and his wife, Donnie and Koni Price, and their two sons and two grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Rackley Tart; grandson, Lewis Brent Wilson; and sister, Janet Flowers Davis.

Reverend Phyllis Vail and Reverend Rose Hicks will officiate the memorial service to be held at St. Joseph United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. The service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., followed by visitation and burial at Pikeville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Joseph United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 43, Pikeville, NC 2763 or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
