Obituary for David Mannie Callis

David Mannie Callis, 83, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at his home.

David was born in Ararat, Ala. on May 16, 1935 to the late Louis N. Callis and Cora Lucas Callis. He lived his dream proudly serving as a navigator in the United States Air Force with 28 years of distinguished service. David will always be remembered for his incredible intelligence, his wonderful sense of humor and his unwavering patriotism. A Vietnam Veteran, David was recognized for his valor and skill throughout his career with numerous decorations, including a Bronze Star.

David was a member of the Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge #173 A.F. & A.M. in Montgomery, Ala. He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community. As an active member of the New Hope and Saulston Ruritan Clubs and Adamsville Baptist Church in Goldsboro, David devoted his time and efforts to bettering the community.

A service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Adamsville Baptist Church with Rev. Ryne Fullerton and Rev. Pat Kilby officiating. Interment will follow in the Eastern Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at their home.

David is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Barbara Stringer Callis; sons, Michael Callis and wife Kim of Oklahoma City, Okla., Greg Callis and wife Liz of Morrisville and Steven Callis and wife Jonjie of Napa, Calif.; sister, Tommie Sue Cogle of Marion Junction, Ala.; brother, Morris Meador of Fairhope, Ala.; grandchildren, Hayley Duque and husband Brian, Sydney Callis, Robby Callis and wife Danielle and Kaitlyn Gardner and husband Caleb; and three great-grandchildren, Clark Michael, Brooks Thomas and Levi David.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Callis, Gaston Callis and James Meador; and sister, Eloise Land.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Adamsville Baptist Church, 1302 N. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534.
