Obituary for Diane Duke Price

Diane Price, formerly of Goldsboro, NC, and Florence, AL, died in Atlanta on August 27th. She was born to the late Matthew and Nolie Harper Duke on July 18, 1946. Her father understood that education could open doors, and told her she needed to go to college but would have to earn financial aid. She took this advice to heart, and after attending Charles B. Aycock High School she earned a B.A. at Atlantic Christian (now Barton) College on scholarship. She then began a distinguished teaching career, working at Southern Wayne High School, Rosewood High School, and lastly Wayne Country Day School, where she was also chairperson for the English department. On top of being a full-time educator and dedicated mother, she continued her own studies by earning a Master’s degree in Education from East Carolina University and was A.B.D. in Education from NC State. Even retirement couldn’t stop her from teaching: she continued sharing her gift by becoming a composition instructor for the University of North Alabama. Her finalist status for North Carolina Teacher of the Year in 1987 only begins to demonstrate the lasting impact of her work. Her approach to teaching was rooted both in her understanding that education can be a great equalizer (as it was for her) and her belief in the worth and equality of every human. She taught students how to express themselves through the written language and shared with them her love of literature. There are thousands of students who can attest to the quality of her instruction, her compassion, and her dedication to helping others achieve their dreams.

She was cherished by her daughter, Heather Price Manso, son, Dr. Matthew Price, and daughter-in-law Dr. Cheryl Blake Price. She was an excellent Mimi to Henry and Adalyn Manso, and an awesome Oma to Elise and Beau Price. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and her husband of 36 years, David Price, and survived by her sister Janet Hinnant. She was a woman who lived for her friends and family and could be counted on for a reassuring “It’s going to be okay” when needed.

If you didn’t know Diane from school, there’s a good chance you saw her friendly face at the YMCA. Filled with life and energy, she loved yoga and spinning classes and even ran the occasional 5K. She was also a patron of the arts and an active supporter of several charities and civic groups. While in Goldsboro she worked with Wayne County Reads and continued her volunteerism in Florence. In addition to patronizing the Shoals Symphony, she was a member of the AAUW and local Democratic Party.

Her family will host a celebration of her life on Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, 1300 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor the woman who gave so many, so much, by donating towards the Shoals AAUW Local Scholarship. Contributions can be sent to: AAUW of the Shoals, Local Scholarship Fund, c/o Caroline Waterman, 280 Robin’s Beach Rd., Killen, AL 35645.
