Obituary for Dollie Underwood Griffin

Dollie Gray Underwood Griffin, 89 years, of Bailey, NC passed away Monday, November 19, 2018. She had been in declining health and died at Wilson Medical Center, Wilson, NC.

Dollie was born January 8, 1929 in Goldsboro, NC to the late Luther and Bertha Craddock Underwood. Three brothers, four sisters, and a first cousin were raised together in her sibling group. All these siblings preceded her in death.

Her early education was in Goldsboro City Schools and she graduated from Goldsboro High School. Following coursework in secretarial skills and administration, she was employed by Wayne Community College and retired from Wilson Community College.

Dollie married Robert Sheldon Griffin and they had many years of happy marriage until his death in 2001. The couple was very socially active and enjoyed traveling to Europe, Hawaii, and across the nation.

This caring mother was very devoted to her two sons. Her elder son, Tommy Smith, died tragically at the age of 21 years. Russell Smith, her younger son, has been residing with her and providing loving care for the past 17 years. Russell's twin children, Zachary Smith and Kandal Smith Brennen, brought joy to her life. Zak works and lives in Raleigh, NC. Kandal is married to Chris Brennen, and they have a 4 year old son Wyatt and a 9 month old daughter Taylor. The Breenen family resides in San Diego, CA. She is also survived by special nieces, nephews and cousins.

It was Dollie's belief that family bonds may be by blood or choice. Other claimed family members are Luis Rafael Walker and a beautiful golden retriever, Cody. Special appreciation is extended to Tammy Turnage of Hampton, VA, for her many years of service and care giving to this special lady.

Dollie Griffin was a true example of a southern lady. Her grandson Zak reported: “She was absolutely the most caring and selfless person I knew or have even met in my whole life. All she did was spend every day thinking about what she could do for others.” Even when her eyesight and health were failing, she continued to care for others in her family and community.

Olivia Crawford related “Dollie was so special and so giving and good to everyone. Best cook in the county hands down.” Russ delivered her renowned pimento cheese, brunswick stew and blueberry pies to family and special friends almost weekly. The centenarian southern lady, Dolly Boone, said “Dollie was a wonderful lady and friend to me for many years.”

Dollie's niece, Becky Carr, hails from Maine. Dollie questioned if she had decent food up north to eat. So when Becky traveled back home from her visits, her van was packed with homemade peanut brittle, collards, corn, sweet potatoes, barbecue, country ham, and of course the pimento cheese.

Her circle of friends, neighbors, and business colleagues respected her intelligence, organizational skills, and ability to get others to do what was right. She had a quick wit, feisty sense of humor, and kept people entertained with her jokes and stories. She will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 23 at St. Joseph United Methodist Church, Pikeville, NC. Arrangements are by Seymour Funeral Home.
