Obituary for James Irving Hood

Goldsboro – James Irving Hood, 98, passed away peacefully at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 surrounded by his family.

James was born in Wayne County on December 6, 1920 to the late Grover and Emma Rose Hood. He was married for almost 79 years to Maggie Hood who preceded him in death on June 15, 2019. James proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a farmer in the Grantham Community and many of his happiest times were spent atop one of his tractors on the family farm. James was a member of the Wayne County Livestock Development Board and had served as past president of the Brightleaf Saddle Club. He was also a proud member of the Selah Christian Church.

James was a man known for his unconditional love for people shown by the abundance of hugs and kisses he gave. Anyone who met him was warmed by his love and affection. Family was paramount to James, and he loved nothing more than his children and grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at Selah Christian Church from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 followed by a service to celebrate James’ life at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Interment will be in Falling Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

James is survived by his children, Trudy Hinson, Jimmy Hood and wife Rita, Grover Hood and wife Teresa, Linda Overton and husband Daryll, and Glenn Hood and wife Betsy; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Manfred Hood and wife Delores of Goldsboro and sister, Ruth Bennett of Goldsboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Durwood, Gordon, Joe Dan, Horace and Jean Hood and sisters, Agnes Harrell and Elizabeth Smith.

Special thanks to Kitty Askins Hospice Center as well as the caregivers who cared for both James and Maggie in their home. May God bless each of you in a very special way.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in his memory to Selah Christian Church, c/o Jason Thornton, 4294 Hwy. 13 South, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
