Obituary for Marie Womack Grantham

Marie Wadsworth Womack Grantham, who was born in Rosewood and lived there for all but two years of her life, died Monday, September 2, 2019, with her family by her side. She was 86.

A charter member of Rosewood First Baptist Church, a congregation that she served for nearly 70 years, Mrs. Grantham had a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. She was an active participant in her church’s mission efforts and a faithful prayer warrior. Mrs. Grantham was known for her Italian cream cake which was among the most sought-after desserts at church socials, local events and family gatherings. She also was known for her love of children and birds.

Mrs. Grantham, who graduated from Rosewood High School in 1950, was one of 10 children born to Thelma and Ivey Wadsworth. In 1953, she married D.B. Womack and was not only a dedicated mother but also a staff member at the Wayne County Public Library and a top saleswoman of Sarah Coventry jewelry. Mr. Womack died in 1995.

Eighteen years later, she married Rosewood High School classmate Carl Grantham, and the couple lived on a farm in Saulston until Mr. Grantham's death in 2015. Mrs. Grantham returned to Rosewood shortly thereafter.

She is survived by daughter Claudia Jones and husband Joe of Fayetteville, their daughters and husbands, Kelly and Cameron Jorgenson of Fayetteville, and Caitlin and Matthew Estes of Birmingham, Ala.; son Gregg Womack and wife Cheryl; their sons, Michael and Matthew, and wife Marisa, all of Goldsboro; son Mark Womack of Angier; three great-grandchildren, Ayden Womack, and Mary Grace and Ellie Jorgenson; and sister Rachel Turner of Rosewood.

Surviving stepchildren include Teresa McLawhorn of Oklahoma City, Okla.; C. Ray Grantham Jr. and wife Allison of Winston-Salem; Bonnie Kennedy and husband Ken of Grimesland; and Loretta Grantham of Naples, Fla.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Rosewood First Baptist Church, 562 N.C. Hwy. 581 South, Goldsboro, NC 27530 and followed by a service in the sanctuary at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Mike Collier and Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating. A graveside service will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rosewood First Baptist Church.
