Obituary for Melvin Grey Wells

Melvin Grey Wells, 84, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve at his home surrounded by his family. He spent his first Christmas in Heaven with his parents, brother, Kenneth Wells and sister, Betty Lou Cuddington and friends who had gone before him.

Melvin was born in Wilson County to the late Mallie and Neta Narron Wells. He was a valued salesman of R.T. French’s Company in Rochester, New York. He also enjoyed working for many years as a referee or umpire for football, basketball, and baseball. His favorite work, however, was as a farmer, and many of his happiest times were spent tending his garden and watching his cows on the family farm.

Melvin enjoyed life and spending time with his family and friends. He lived a life of dedication to his community as a member of the Pikeville Lion’s Club. As a member of the Lion’s Club, Melvin served as President and won the Melvin Jones National Award. Melvin was also a dedicated member of the Pike’s Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church. He could be found many Sundays sharing his gift of music by singing gospel for his church community. Melvin’s true passion, however, was golf and could often be found at Lane Tree Golf Club. If it was a beautiful day, he enjoyed being on the links sharing shots and laughter with his friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Melvin’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Sasser Wells; son, Willie Marvin Waters of Pikeville; daughter, Melody Lynn Wells Hine of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Jessica Smith and husband Matt, Stacey Strickland and husband Charlie, Christopher Hine, Stepheny Hine, and Jacqueline Hine; great-grandchildren, Jani Smith, Nick Smith, Spencer Smith, Jayden Smith, Alexis Strickland and Gavin Strickland; and brother, Gordon Wells of Williamston.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Pikeville Lions Club, P.O. Box 338, Pikeville, NC 27863 so Melvin’s legacy can continue on through the projects the Lions Club supports.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
