Obituary for Mildred Blackmon Hodgin

Mildred Blackmon Hodgin passed away peacefully on December 30, 2018. Mildred was born in Kenly, NC on January 31, 1933 to Fred Lindsey Blackmon Sr. and Eva Durham Blackmon. She spent most of her youth in Whitakers, NC and graduated from Whitakers High School. Mildred was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, NC.

Mildred taught business education in Wayne County at Brogden School then at Stoneville High School in Rockingham County, before returning to Wayne County to teach at Goldsboro High School. In April 1960 she accepted the general manager position at Seymour Johnson Federal Credit Union. She worked to modernize and grow the credit union for 35 years, and retired as President in 1995. While working in the credit union industry, Mildred was an active leader on the state and national scene serving on the boards of the North Carolina Credit Union League and the Defense Credit Union Council and was a member of the NCUA’s National Credit Union Executive Society. She was inducted into the Defense Credit Union Hall of Honor in 2001.

Her local endeavors included serving others through Toastmasters International, The Business and Profession Women’s Club, adjunct teaching at Wayne Community College, serving on the area Girl Scout Council, and as a director of the Chamber of Commerce. She was a long time member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA).

Mildred enjoyed golf, spending time at the beach, traveling to new places, and all good social gatherings.

She will always be remembered as a pioneer working mom, and a trailblazing champion for business and professional women everywhere.

Mildred is pre-deceased by her two brothers Fred L Blackmon, Jr, and Roy E Blackmon, and survived by her husband of over 62 years, H. Calvin Hodgin and two sons Bruce Hodgin (Ceil) of Winston-Salem and Brian Hodgin (Pam) of Charlotte. Her legacy includes four grandchildren Wesley, Emily, Karen, and Clark.

The family is thankful to the many dedicated and caring people who have cared for Mildred over the years.
